Introduction:

Having the best air compressor in your garage was my dad’s mantra.   He was a union carpenter and a DIY’er his entire life. He remodeled my childhood home many times and completed so many projects it’s mind-boggling.   As a kid, he always had me help him with his projects.  I loved working with my dad, but as a kid, many times I had “better things to do” and wasn’t always happy about being his little helper.  But as an adult, I more than appreciate the knowledge and talents he passed on.  He passed a few years ago, and I miss him more than you can imagine.  The memories and his sayings are priceless, and I’ll always treasure them.   One that still makes me laugh is his saying over and over: “John, you gotta have air”.   He was of course referring to having an air compressor.

He always had an air compressor in his garage to drive pneumatic tools as well as a host of other uses.  It really is one of the most useful tools any do-it-yourselfer or homeowner can have.   Shortly after I got married, I bought my first air compressor to go along with a Brad Nailer that I used to do small projects.  It was a small portable Craftsman with a 3-gal tank, a great little unit.  We have been married for over 35 years and have owned 9 homes. During that time, I’ve owned 4-5 compressors, both portable and somewhat stationary.  Without a doubt, if you are a DIY’er of any skill level, an air compressor is a necessity.

Why Every Garage Needs an Air Compressor

Whether you are inflating tires, using manual tools, or in my case blowing out a sprinkler system, you need an air compressor in your garage or work area. It’s not just about inflation, an air compressor powers a countless number of really useful tools.  So selecting the best air compressor for your garage is an essential component to make your life easier.

Key Factors to Consider When Buying an Air Compressor for Your Garage

Before rushing out to purchase the best air compressor for your garage, you need to weigh in on a few essentials:

  • Size & Tank Volume: Does it fit comfortably in your garage? Will it run as long as you need it?
  • Noise Levels: No one appreciates a noisy neighbor, so choose a quieter model for peace in the community.
  • Portability: How will you use it? Do you need it stationary or mobile for various tasks around the home?
  • Pump Type: Understanding the difference between oil-free and oil-lubricated can influence longevity and maintenance.
  • Motor Efficiency: A swift start-up and sustained air pressure can drastically influence task efficiency.
  • Price: Remember, the most expensive isn’t always the best. Match quality with your needs and budget.
