When looking up information about keeping your pets happy and healthy, or maybe looking up how to stop one or more destructive behaviors, you may have come upon the phrase “enrichment activities.” Dogs are intelligent creatures that require mental and physical stimulation to lead a healthy and happy life, and these enrichment activities provide dogs with the opportunity to use their natural instincts and cognitive abilities, while also reducing the risk of behavior problems such as boredom, anxiety, and destructiveness. Enrichment activities specifically refers to activities that aim to provide dogs with opportunities to engage in natural and stimulating behaviors, both mentally and physically, to enhance their overall well-being. They are designed to meet the behavioral needs of dogs, such as their need to explore, play, and interact with their environment. They can be as simple as hiding treats around the house or as complex as setting up an obstacle course. The goal is to provide dogs with a stimulating and engaging environment that keeps them happy and healthy, and hopefully away from chewing on your chair legs. The aim is to help reduce boredom, anxiety, and destructive behaviors and improve socialization, problem-solving abilities, and overall physical and mental health.
It may sound intimidating, but I assure you it’s actually quite easy. I’ve come up with a bunch of different options to keep my little ball of energy KC entertained for hours leaving her happy and healthy, and me free to do whatever else I need to get done with my day. Here are six easy-to-do enrichment activities for your dog that you can do at home.
- Puzzle Toys: Puzzle toys are an excellent way to engage your dog’s mind and keep them entertained. There are many puzzle toys available in the market, or you can make your own using cardboard boxes or plastic containers. Fill the toy with treats or kibble and watch your dog figure out how to get to the goodies. Plus it’s always fun watching your pup work their way through a particularly challenging puzzle! You can find KC’s favorite puzzle game here.
- Snuffle Mat: A snuffle mat is a perfect way to engage your dog’s sense of smell. You can make one yourself by tying strips of fleece or fabric onto a rubber mat or using a grass mat, or you can purchase one here. Sprinkle some treats or kibble on the mat and let your dog use their nose to find them.
- Frozen Treats: During hot weather, you can make some frozen treats for your dog to keep them cool and entertained. Use chicken broth, yogurt, or peanut butter to make popsicles or use a Kong toy and fill it with wet food, peanut butter, or other treats and freeze it. If you have read our other blog posts you’ll know that frozen treats are KC’s favorite snack! A frozen Kong will keep her entertained for hours!
- Hide and Seek: Hide and seek is a fun game that can be played indoors or outdoors. Hide treats or toys around the house or backyard and encourage your dog to find them. Start with easy hiding spots and gradually increase the difficulty.
- Agility Course: You can set up a small agility course in your backyard using household items like chairs, boxes, and cones. Teach your dog to jump over obstacles, crawl under chairs or climb on boxes, and reward them with treats.
- Training Games: Dogs enjoy learning, and training can be a fun way to engage their minds. Teach your dog new tricks like high-five, roll over or play dead. You can also play games like fetch or tug-of-war to keep them entertained.
